Anxiety
Anxiety for some of us remains mild–the usual stress and worry that comes with daily living. But for others, anxiety becomes more severe, ranging from obsessive, negative thoughts to frequent and severe panic.
Signs of anxiety may include:
- Excessive fears and worries that are difficult to control
- Restlessness or feeling constantly on edge
- Irritability
- Excessive wariness or vigilance
- Muscle tension, headaches, cramps
- Difficulty concentrating
- Fatigue
- Sleep disturbance
- Obsessive thoughts and behaviors
- Frequent panic attacks
Sometimes the symptoms of anxiety mimic the signs of depression, and often the two go together.
After a medical evaluation rules out any medical reasons for the symptoms, therapy can help you identify the source of your anxiety and then teach you ways to manage it. My own work with clients may include breathing and relaxation exercises, mindfulness meditation, self-talk, and self-soothing activities.
“You’ve helped me immensely. I’m nowhere near where I was when I first saw you in terms of obsessive thinking and anxiety. I’ve learned a lot from doing therapy with you!” — A.
